Creative Writing MFA Updated

[UPDATE 3/11: not adding a new thread as per mod request. personally, i officially accepted the cornell offer in fiction last week (yay!). please note that the list below is highly incomplete and just based on what i have in my head. i haven't been systematic about all the programs, so look at the comments if you don't see yours.]

Arkansas - one person got accepted in poetry. no idea about fiction.
Brown - one phoned poetry acceptance reported.
Brooklyn College - someone reported a rejection in fiction.
Columbia - poetry and fiction acceptances and rejections.
Cornell - called acceptees in both fiction and poetry. rejection letters also sent out, but there's no official waiting list so if you haven't received one yet, you might be on it.
Florida - e-mailed acceptees in both fiction and poetry.
George Mason - poetry acceptance.
Hunter - shortlisted students have been notified. acceptances reported.
Iowa - it seems that all notifications have been sent out.
Indiana - poetry acceptance.
Johns Hopkins - rejections reported in fiction and poetry. an acceptance reported in fiction.
Michener Center, UT Austin - phoned acceptances in both fiction and poetry, though not sure if they've informed everyone. also sent waitlist notices (mail or e-mail, not sure). status can be checked online. rejection letters have also been sent out.
Michigan - e-mailed all accepted students in both fiction and poetry. several people have reported mail and e-mail waitlist notices.
Montana - notified a fiction person of acceptance over the phone.
NYU - no word yet.
Ohio State University - one person waitlisted in poetry. haven't heard about fiction.
Sarah Lawrence - no word yet.
Stegner - people have been notified of acceptances over the phone in both poetry and fiction.
Syracuse - one person got in for poetry. rejections have also been reported.
UC Irvine - no word yet. they tend to notify as late as early april, apparently.
UMass Amherst - multiple acceptances and rejections in fiction and poetry. application status can be checked online.
USC - no word yet.
UPitt - poetry acceptance.
Utah - called acceptees in fiction. no word on poetry, and also sent rejections.
UWisconsin Madison - rejections updated online, a couple of waitlist notices in fiction. no idea about poetry.
Wash. U St. Louis - lots of rejection notices by post, one person reported an acceptance in poetry.

i have all my fingers and toes crossed for people now. you just never know with michigan... if it's a low-yield year they may just call you out of the blue. i already know two people who are declining, and i'm likely to take myself off the waiting list by the end of march if i haven't heard from them.

Re: Acceptance/Rejection

I know SLC undergraduate admissions committee doesn't meet until spring break (which starts this Friday for us) for final decisions. (I work in the admissions office as part of my work-study.) The same may be true for graduate, but I can't confirm it. Good luck!

Just called Michigan

I finally decided to just call Michigan. The acceptance and rejection letters were sent on Monday, so if you've heard nothing like me, hang on. You'll probably have a letter by the end of the week (or beginning of the next, if the mail is slow.)

UW-Madison--fiction

Rejected. Found out online. It said they just sent letters out.

Anonymous

March 2 2006, 17:54:27 UTC 6 years ago

FYI

Arkansas has a rolling-style admissions process. There's not a uniform decision date--applicants get a letter approximately six weeks after they apply.

Anonymous

March 2 2006, 17:56:08 UTC 6 years ago

Notre Dame will notify around the middle of March for acceptances. Rejections will come some time in April.

Accepted by letter?

Has anyone been accepted anywhere BY POSTAL MAIL???

Anonymous

March 2 2006, 18:54:41 UTC 6 years ago

Re: Accepted by letter?

Ha ha, seriously. Postal mail is so much more dignified, and so much more proper for the occasion.

Some things are best done the old-fashioned way. And grad school admissions notification is one of them. Grrrrrr.

Anybody figured out what the difference is between "applied" and "pending" on the UMass admissions website? (Mine says the latter, and I'm convinced it's the Admissions Website of Doom telling me to let go of my silly dreams.)

Anonymous

March 2 2006, 19:37:54 UTC 6 years ago

UMass

I would like to know the difference too. If there are some people who still have "applied" - maybe "pending" actually means something...

Speaking of the postal service

For those of you who received either acceptances or rejections through snail-mail, did the school end up sending it to your permanent or current address? [assuming there is a difference between the two]

March 2 2006, 20:13:50 UTC 6 years ago

Re: Speaking of the postal service

A week after learning about my Michener rejection online my parent's, located in the Midwest, received one. Why they sent it there, since I only live several blocks from UT, I don't know.

Michigan-fiction-rejection-snail mail.

I received my first actual mail notice today...from Michigan! I was rejected. 8 more to go. Good luck to everyone else to applied...the letter said something about a record number of people applying this year. Oh, and I applied in fiction.

Where to check your status.

I'm starting this thead so everyone can post links to the sites that allow applicants to check their websites. Feel free to add in your schools' sites.

Here's a start:

Austin: http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/services/status/

Iowa: isis.uiowa.edu

University of San Francisco: link is ridiculously long, go to http://www.usfca.edu/acadserv/admission/ and click on "Admission Status"

Amherst: https://webapp.spire.umass.edu/ admissions/htdocs/applicant/gradapp_logon.ht

Re: Iowa-poetry-rejection-snail mail

Damn. I was really, really, hoping you'd get in.

Next year. You're in Iowa City for a while, and it's a great city, right?

Maybe you don't want to head down to George's or the Foxhead tonight, tho. Might run into one too many Workshoppers. Ever been to Hilltop? It's great.
