Congrats, but how did you get accepted so quickly? Most English departments I know of haven't even sat down yet (U Penn, for example, had a Dec. 15 deadline and they haven't started the review process yet).
Applied to PhD programs in English at Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Penn and Duke. Haven't heard yet; does anybody know if the adcoms have finished meeting / reviewing applications? I'm actually already in a PhD program, at the University of Rochester, but am looking to transfer to a top 5 school in my field (South Asian literature in English).
Columbia and Harvard have already made up their minds...if you haven't heard from either, then you may be out of luck. But if you haven't heard from Duke, then that's a good thing--they already rejected some people
McGill is a waste of time after the B.A. (in English, that is), and they have an extremely disorganized department. Because they are in Quebec, they have funding problems (which is why, I'm told, they prefer internatinal students, i.e., so they can gouge you). To answer your question: CDN schools have started the process for the most part (except Queen's, since their deadline is Feb. 1). UofT typically sends out rejections first starting in mid-February, but typically you hear back in March. Queen's and McGill have pretty fast turnarounds: usually 3-4 weeks.
Just in case anyone is stumbling in here without checking applyingtograd, my recent post has info on the general decision times for several grad schools (for english lit/lang), including, but not limited to: UVA, UCLA, NYU, Ohio State, UNC, Penn State, U. Washington, SUNY Buffalo, Rutgers, and Berkeley. Many of the ivies are mentioned as well. Here's the link:
I did want to add one quick comment: The archives for whogotin.com do not include ALL of the responses that people posted last year. Thus, there were earlier and later responses for each of the schools listed, and there were also responses for various schools that aren't listed in the archives.
Also, as far as the dates go, if you forgot to select a date when you posted your info on whogotin.com, the default date showed up as 1/1/05. So, any responses that say 1/1/05 were simply created by people who forgot to add in their specific dates (i.e. don't worry because as far as anyone could tell from last year, there were no notifications in English by 1/1).
Sorry - that's never a good feeling. Don't worry though. You have applications out there still (I'm guessing), and so you should not worry. I know it sucks, but try to stay positive. :) Good luck with the rest of your apps!
For those of you applying to Cornell, just thought I'd post this; if prospective grads are to begin visiting before end-Feb, it sounds like Cornell will be notifying very soon, probably a few days earlier than last year:
Dean English Grad Students:
As you may remember if you visited us before making the decision to attend Cornell, staying with a current graduate student can be crucial to the success of these visits.
That being said, I am now asking for volunteers (especially from you first year students) to host prospective grads who will begin visiting before the end of the month. Of course, I will discourage anyone from visiting during spring break!
Grad students who host will receive $30 towards groceries, dinner at a restaurant or credit towards your copier account, whichever you value more. We do require original receipts in order to reimburse you, so if you do host someone please save your receipts.
Wow! It even sounds like they contacted people already. Don't you need time to get plane tickets at a reasonable cost and all that? Ugghh...runs to corner while biting nails.
I had foolishly been posting in the Literature / Comp. Lit section. So, for the record, here are my schools:
Harvard Yale Stanford Princeton Duke Cornell UC Irvine UC Berkeley U W Madison U Michigan Johns Hopkins Virginia
I know -- it's a lot, right. Well, I haven't heard anything either way from any of these schools, which I think is good news at this point. As my rejections (and possibly acceptances?) come in, I will inform the neurotic public.
Wow, that's quite a few, and top schools to bat. I'm curious how you (as well as other people) were able to apply to so many schools. I had the year off and barely applied to 6! Do keep us posted.
Are you a Canuck or American? If American, why bother with UWO? They're weird and rude. I was thinking of Victoria, but they are incredibly small (29 applicants 3 of whom are admitted). I'm up there with you on Virginia :)
I'm surprised not to see too many people on this thread applying to U. Chicago's Eng PhD program. Is it no longer considered on a par with UC Berkeley, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Duke, UC Irvine, etc.? I'm curious because I'm thinking I'd like to apply there next year.
I applied there. I would say it's far ahead of Duke, UCI and Hopkins in terms of prestige. However, I think the most important criteria in choosing a school is the strength of the faculty in your area.
Uh-oh. So people have heard from Duke and Cornell; I haven't. Now I'm in trouble! Would it be worth calling the depts on Monday and asking if they've made a decision on my application?
Particularly when it comes to Duke, if people are getting rejected and you're not, it's a good thing. Last year, they sent out a couple of waves of rejections before admitting people. They are one of the few schools with a policy of sending official notifications from the graduate school (via email) before contacting applicants directly. Therefore, people tend to get rejected really early from Duke, and admitted folks don't hear till a bit later. As most people know, it's the total reverse at most places.
Could the people getting acceptances give a bit more information? I would like to know if the acceptance is by email, phone, or snail mail. For example, someone in another thread said that they received their acceptance letter this morning -- now was that an electronic letter or a paper letter? For the hopeful in Canada it would be helpful since snail mail acceptances could take forever to get here! Also, if one feels comfortable or posts anonymously, he or she could mention the type of funding offered. Anyway, congratulations to the accepted and good luck to the still waiting peeps.
My understanding is that the process varies from place to place but I received an acceptance letter yesterday by email - the contents informed me that official letters would be sent out early next week, but the email was to give applicants as much notice as possible to consider the offer and plan campus visits. I imagine the snail mail leter will be more detailed.
Also, while the PhD program has finalized it's first round - the MFA has not, so turn around times obviously vary, not only from university to university, but also from department to department.
It's a slow admissions day, so I thought I'd post something english related. Question: just how important are the GREs in the admission process? I know the Math section doesn't really matter, but as far as Verbal and Subject go, does it differ from school to school? Are they used as cutoffs? Is the Verbal more important than the subject? etc, etc. I have my conjectures, but they are just that.
The importance of GRE scores differs from school to school. Some schools, such as Duke and Columbia, don't even require the GRE subject test.
The Analytical Writing and Verbal scores are, obviously, the most important for English departments. However, each department gives a different amount of importance to your scores. Another school I applied to (top 20) told me that they have set cutoffs. No matter what, scores below their cutoffs (I think 650 verbal and 600 subject) would = the application most likely being tossed.
The best advice I have is to check with each school. Also, an important aspect to remember is that while your department may not care so much about your GREs, they may be used as criteria for university-wide fellowships and other funding.
I emailed the secretary at SUNY-Buffalo to ask about my status. She checked her list and replied that I am neither accepted nor wait-listed for their PhD program, adding that I probably won't hear officially for some time.
Buffalo was my "safety school," so even though I basically didn't want to go there, this is a real disappointment. I wonder how long it will take before I hear some good news.
