Anyone know anything about where Purdue has placed people for PhDs in the past?

Ask them, or ask a student. I'm at an MA, and we get these questions - I think departments should be forthcoming about this.

Has anyone heard good things about this program or if it has good placement into HPS PhD programs?
I'm probably going to FSU's PhD program, and the HPS seems solid. The whole department seems very collegial and full of sharp and interested profs. Michael Ruse is a 'heavy-hitter,' and James Justus is a great and very bright young hire. However, he'll be gone next year, and back after that, so take this into account.
Where would you go for an MA:

1) Houston
2) Georgia State
3) Florida State
4) Univ. of Missouri, St.Louis
5) University of Utah
6) Purdue
7) Texas Tech

And..most importantly.. WHY??? :)
Utah if you're a skiier, but if it was me (a skier), I'd still pick Georgia State: solid faculty, serious about placing into good PhD programs, and I love the cog sci emphasis.

Are there still others out there who have not heard anything? I know they did a sizable round of rejections a few weeks ago so I remain hopeful of an unofficial waitlist.
I'm another.

Anyone on here get a funded offer for their MA?
Got an e-mail from the dept chair at Saint Louis University. They sent out a round of acceptances and a "fair number" of rejections. For those of us who haven't heard back, it means that we are "on the bubble," and I suppose we'll be in consideration until they fill their slots.

I guess I am on the bubble. Haven't heard anything as of 1 pm Wednesday.

This is killing me. I can't believe I'm going to have to live through this for another 2 or 3 weeks.

Fell off the bottom of the waiting list. Got the email today.
You mean they kicked you off of the waiting list or you moved from the bottom of the list to a spot higher on the list?

I have a friend who is condidering this program. Does anyone here have any thoughts/experience/hearsay pertaining to this program? Thanks in advance.
My friend's boyfriend goes there. He's happy there, focusing philosophy of mind, metaphysics, etc. I can ask him some specific questions if you have any. Or if you have questions about the campus/university itself or about San Diego, I can answer those!

If you had unfunded PhD offers from Marquette and Southern Illinois-Carbondale, would you:
1) Go to Marquette
2) Go to Carbondale
3) Reapply next year

Marquette allows deferral with the chance of being reconsidered for funding the next year, if that changes the calculation.

Thanks!
I'd buy a lotto ticket every day between now and April 15th.

What would you do if...

You got into 2 schools. School 1 is unranked but it has strength in your area and great community, plus you got a fellowship there (20K for 5 years) and they are courting you.

School 2 is a top 10 school with strengths in every area, but the money is far less (15K for 5 years) and the community is weak.

I'm interested to know what people here would do.
Since the top ranked school is "strong in every area" by hypothesis, I would tough it out in the less pleasant environment of the more prestigious school so that I would be able to get a job upon graduating. However, if the top 10 school isn't strong in your AOI and the unranked school is (if you were choosing between Yale and University of Cincinnati and wanted to do philosophy of biology, for example), then it is a much harder choice.

Just declined an offer with 68 percent tuition remission. Seriously, great school, horrible finances. I couldn't have afforded it if I'd wanted.

Dude did you get in everywhere?

When you're comfortable to do so, will you post your credentials here? And your writing sample?

Anyone have any word on what's happening? There's a few rejections on TGC, so it looks like they are trimming the 'secret waitlist,' or they never had one (but if not, why would they wait to inform?). Anyone get a rejection: did it say anything enlightening?
I got one today. It said nothing enlightening.

there haven't been comments by acceptees, but I am wondering, have people been getting rejections already? I have offers from two other schools, but I am still waiting for a response from CUNY, which would be a contender against them ... Any rejects? waiters? anything?
Wasn't today suppose to be the day?

I vaguely recall receiving an email a month ago that said that they xpected to notify applicants by March 25 if not sooner.

Has anyone here heard from them?
An email went out today saying decisions have been delayed to Friday. *sigh*

Someone on grad cafe said they were accepted off the waitlist. Did anyone on the waitlist receive information about how high up on the list they were? I was only told that I am on it.
I was the one accepted off the waitlist, and they hadn't previously told me about my position on the waitlist. I've been accepted at a top 30 PhD program that is very strong in my area, so I'll probably be declining the offer soon. I hope it frees a spot up for you.

Seriously, the advice for choosing programs pane, and a series of other subsections of the report...does anyone actually think they are useful for incoming and perspective students?
What's wrong with it?
So, now that we all seem to know our place on the Wisconsin (Madison) waiting-list, is anyone out there thinking of declining?
This is not what you want to hear, but there is a good chance I will be accepting an offer at Madison. I am WLed at another school and, if I was accepted there, it would be a very difficult to decision, but, failing that, I am Madison bound.

I declined my offer of admission from Emory today. Good luck to those on the wait list!
Where do you think you're going instead? Or, what offers do you still have on the table?

Villanova

Is anyone going to decline an acceptance to Villanova? Please?
Declining Houston today. Received an acceptance from the university, but no word from the department. No follow up, no "funding decisions will be made in April...". I would rather go to a school that gave a damn about their prospective students.
I am the graduate chair of the MA program at the University of Houston, and want to assure you that we DO care about our prospective students. I apologize for your not receiving information on our funding decisions in a timely way. This was a failure in our system which we will make sure does not arise again next year.

We are in the middle of that decision process right now and our target date for informing students is April 15, though it may be be as soon as April 6.

Though this is no excuse for our lapse, it is worth saying that directors of graduate programs welcome communication from prospective students. So if you have any questions at all about your application, simply e-mail the director, and you should get a quick response.
Does anyone currently have an offer or waitlist spot from Virginia Tech that they plan on declining, but have not done so yet?

People "within the Top 10" on the waitlist are curious ;).
I will likely decline my offer although I haven't decided for certain.
I guess the subject said it all.
There is an 80% chance I will decline my offer from Rice.
There is someone out there who wouldn't mind it at all if the people in at DePaul who already knew that they were or were not going to go there would accept or decline as early as possible. That someone is in at a couple other places but getting bumped up into accepted territory would make him very happy. just sayin'

I personally know someone who is planning to decline his DePaul offer.

I got a rejection in reply to an e-mail to Mitchell Green referencing the earlier post about the wait list. So apparently some people who have heard are not on the wait list. I guess the message is not to assume anything about your status until you have heard. Some programs do not notify people that they are on the wait list until April, so the only thing you can probably be sure of at this point is that you are not a first round offer (unless some university is really behind). I have now heard from everyone and have one wait list for admission and one wait list for funding. Neither one sounded optimistic as to my chances. I am becoming skeptical of the theory that having an MA helps.
Can I ask if you received your M.A. from a strong program and whether or not you had a good graduate GPA?

I am just now deciding between a very good M.A. and a not as good Ph.D. program and so it would help me to know this. Thank you!

After inquiry, I received a rejection letter in my e-mail. It's over! I'm actually kind of happy to have closure.
