I was already going to write to Rutgers that I would take their offer when, out of the blue, both NYU and Princeton contacted me today (NYU via e-mail, Princeton via phone call) that I have been offered a place in their PhD programs. NYU has not said a word about funding though...

How come? At this point of the year?
I am baffled...and deliriously happy!!!!!!
All those months working hard on GRE preparation have finally paid off!!!!!!!
Either someone just had a really good day or the trolls have woken up and left their caves.

If the former, congrats!

Interests in ethics/metaethics, phil mind (particularly metaphysics of mind), a little general metaphysics as well.
Any advice?
Hey! I think maybe I saw your post on philprospective... we have similar interests maybe, it looks like. Sorry I'm not knowledgeable about either school... :( But if you want to talk pros and cons with me of both, message me. Maybe I can help having a similar perspective, etc.
No, this isn't an April fools joke (unless Pierre Keller is playing one on me). I just got an e-mail from Dr. Keller informing me that an acceptance offer is about to be sent to me; my application has been "sent up for processing." He wanted to send me the good news beforehand though I guess. H . o . l . y s . h . i . t !
Congratulations!! :D I know someone who got a late offer from Riverside. It seems like a great place, lots of quality people. Fully funded 5 years?
Apparently, it was tonight. Impressions?

Is anyone planning to turn down Brown or Maryland?
I turned down Maryland today, along with Rutgers, UCSD, UC Irvine (LPS), and Notre Dame (philosophy track of the HPS program). Good luck!
Any anecdotal information?? Advice from anyone who has gone there for their MA?
No first-hand info, but I am a little concerned about their placement record. I think 20 out of their last 34 received funded offers and they don't break down their stats so one or two kids could have gotten into most of the big schools. I would also appreciate any info about the place.

Title says it all
Does anyone expect to accept an offer at Arizona?
I was looking at some wgi threads for the previous years. It seems like alot of people come off waitlists on the 14th, 15th, and even beyond in some cases. How is this supposed to work? Is the idea that you just string along the school you are accepted at until late April 15th in hopes that an offer will materialize? At what point are you supposed to stop playing this game of chicken and forget about the waitlists?

And what is the hold-up at this point? Are people still visiting campuses and pretending to weigh options? In previous years, the process seems delayed by a few people who've been accepted to several top twenty schools and they just refuse to decline any until 5pm April 15th when they make the "agonizing" and "extremely difficult" decision to go to NYU. /rant
I know that it's frustrating, but it's not so easy when you are deciding between offers. Last year I was on several waitlists that never came through for me. The week of April 15th was a miserable slide into disappointment.

However, this year I am in the fortunate position of having several offers to decide between—and I'm also currently on one waitlist that would probably trump them all. The chances are that I will hold on to two of my current offers until April 15th, and decide on one or the other if my waitlist doesn't come through. The two offers I have in mind are very different: different funding packages, locations (where family will play a role), strengths within the programs. In short, I'd be deciding between two very different careers. Not easy to just make the call and stick with my decision while there is still time on the clock.

I can see the anger over people who have all of their options laid open by the middle of March and yet still wait until 5pm on April 15th to make the call—this seems excessive—but for most people all of the data doesn't come in until right around the 15th. And considering this is the most important career decision many of us have made up until this point, it only makes sense that it's an agonizing one that requires as much time to mull over as we can get.

(Great) long-term relationship or (potentially much) better career?

Yeah, that's vague. It's also what the decision has boiled down to. I'm just soliciting everyone's opinions at this point, I figure getting a few strangers' viewpoints can't hurt too much.
Why the dichotomy? Why not both and stick it out a few years with distance?

Re: umm

I have asked that my name be withdrawn from the UVa wait list. I admit that this was a difficult decision. UVa has an amazing program with great faculty and students.

I was told that I had a strong chance of gaining admission, so I believe this may help some of the other wait listed applicants. Good luck to those waiting on UVa!
Do you know how many people are on the wait-list group? I know Mitch mentioned that people on the list aren't ranked. Rather, as soon as an offered is turned down the committee convenes and decides on someone from the list. But how many of us are on there?

Re: Name off of UVa Waitlist

I have withdrawn my name from the waitlists at both Boston College and Vanderbilt. Both have strong programs in my area, but I'll be going elsewhere. I hope this helps someone else on the waitlist.
Ah, you left Vandy behind. May I ask where you are leaning?
Current grad students and untenured PhDs on grad school choice, etc:
http://philosophysmoker.blogspot.com/2009/03/advice-for-undergraduates.html

There's a good 25 comments under the topic.
Whenever I come across a conversation about the prospects for professional philosophers, I'm always struck by how quickly someone points out the miserable nature of the whole thing. And, lo and behold, we have "I regret that I became a philosopher... I've had a fair share of pubs and a tenure track job, but I'm poor and lonely and I might have fucked myself for years to come. Go do something meaningful with your life that allows you to have a savings account, friends, family, and some control over where you get to live. If you are convinced that those aren't options you'll ever have, then I guess you might as well just go to graduate school instead of falling off of a bridge."

What is the deal here? Does philosophy attract neurotic and self-loathing students, or does pursuing philosophy often make people that way?

Kelly Oliver has been busy over at Vandy! Not only did Vandy get Wuerth (Kant) from Cincinatti, but now May (political and law) and Friedman (moral/political and feminism) from Wash U STL are heading to Nashville!
Whaaaaaaat! Where'd you hear that? I go to Wash U, and this is pretty surprising to me!

I just called Aaron James and declined my (funded) offer at UC Irvine (Philosophy track, not LPS). It's a really great program, so I hope someone is able to take my spot (I'm not sure if they have a waitlist or not).

I just officially declined my offer from Stanford, unofficially declined my offer from UT Austin (meaning I emailed them to tell them and ask how to do it officially, since they didn't tell me in their emails or letters), and removed myself from the UCLA wait list. The Stanford and UT offers were funded, though the UT offer was a combination of fellowship and TA-ship (I would've started teaching immediately, which was a secondary factor in my decision). Hope this helps somebody.
