I have reason to believe that there are recruiters reading this board and using it to milk information about accepted students (anonymously, of course). Wonder if anyone else has similar evidence. (Obviously, I can't disclose mine.)
I dont see why any of the information on here would be all that useful to the members of adcoms,.

I am finding this situation very disheartening now.
I am still waiting for 8 more rejections (I hope I am being pessimistic rather than realistic, but somehow doubt it).
It's very difficult to plan for the future when there is uncertainty still involved. I find it very frustrating that admissions committees delay rejection so considerably. A nicely phrased mass email to rejectees would be perfectly acceptable - and if they really wanted to sugar coat it post facto, then they can follow up themselves later. But give us certainty! It is what Philosophers strove for since Descartes (and then mostly gave up on) but if we can have it in this, then let us have it.
If I don't get in, I need to start looking for jobs - but I don't want to start interviewing at places and not be able to accept offers on the day.
Anyone else getting similarly frustrated?

R.T.
My solution is to read the ancient Stoics.
I just talked to Karen Sites today, and she said that Boulder will send out its decisions for its MA program on Friday. Not sure if this means e-mail or post. Either way, they're coming soon.
Probably email, that's what they did last year.

So this is kind of odd. I just noticed when I log in to my Rutgers account there is a recommendation listed by a person I have never even heard of (and it says it was submitted around 1/30/2009, far past the deadline). What the hell? Did that happen to anyone else? Could it be an internal thing?
Did you do a search on the person and "philosophy" and see what comes up?

Is there anyone else out there who has failed to get anything from them so far? It looks like acceptances and rejections went out by the last week in February. I'm on the west coast, but surely it can't take that long to get from Chicago to the coast! Anyone have any info?
They might be considering offering you one of those MAPH opportunities.

I just emailed everyone. Im sick of waiting. whatever. Ill let yall know if I hear anything....
Before everyone else goes crazt mass e-mailing, give departments until end of business Monday, March 16.

I've been in contact with a few departments that I haven't heard from, along with insiders at other places, and they all said, "by the end of this week we should have given every applicant an initial notification."

After next Monday, bulk e-mail away!
under this thread could people post the schools to which they are accepted but are going to decline the offer of admission. (continued from last page)
I will be declining a full funding + University Wide fellowship offer from Rochester.
Will they ever make their decisions?
I have it on good authority that decisions are shortly to be released -- by email, usually.

I wasn't accepted, but I haven't received a rejection letter or notification of being waitlisted.

Anyone else in this boat? I'm sure I would have received the rejections they sent out earlier this month by now if they sent me one.
Yeah, I think there are a couple of us in the same situation. My guess is that they're holding our names on the off-chance that they need to go a little deeper into the applicant pool to fill some slots. I wouldn't hold my breath.

Is today the day? Does anyone know if they typically notify by phone or e-mail?
Tomorrow.

Wow impressive acceptances. I have experiences with both NU/DePaul programs on the undergraduate level. Your decision should depend largely around your interests, of course. Perhaps I can lend a quick hand: German Idealism/Phenomenology/Heidegger is extremely strong at DePaul. NU is much more pluralistic. Faculty wise they are both great and very supportive to their students; although, I feel as if DePaul’s faculty is a bit under-rated. Name wise, and overall prestige, NU gets the upper hand. NU also wins in the general student category as I have noticed a more mature demeanor. For your viewing pleasure, NU gets the better ‘campus’ but DePaul gets the better ‘location/neighborhood’ in Chicago. If you’re into sports you’ll know Big Ten>Big East. Overall it’s not an easy decision but I would personally go with DePaul.

you fool!
Just called the GC: she couldn't tell me my status because they hadn't made their decision yet. Unfortunately, there is only one rejection on TGC, so there is no reason to believe that the unnotified are in/WLed.
If you look at the rejection it is specified that they emailed the dept. (presumably the grad. director) and was informed of the rejection. So yes, there is absolutely no reason to think that b/c you haven't heard anything you will hear something positive soon. Congrats, though, to the few that have already made it in. I'm having a hard time not being jealous.
I just received an e-mail from Professor Achille Varzi notifying me that I have been accepted at Columbia University. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited.
wow! CONGRATS!!! At the very least, you can say I got into Columbia.. haha

Purdue MA

Anyone heard anything about Purdue MA? When we can expect to hear back?
Some programs have yet to make decisions. I wonder if they know that the longer they wait, the better my existing offers look.
It's true. Notifying admittees early has been shown to have distinct advantages in breeding loyalty. This is why a lot of colleges notify undergrad applicants very early in the application year.
OSU via checking online application status.

Berkeley via email at 2:23pm eastern.

Five official rejections; Yale, UNC, Berkeley, OSU, UCSD.

Still waiting to hear back from 7 schools. Still predicting shutout.

This has been the most depressing experience of my life. I can't help but feel like the past 5 years of my life were a complete waste.
just got my berkeley rejection too

This is a link to a NY Times article about how doctoral candidates (especially in the humanities) are anticipating hard times that may not end any time soon.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/07/arts/07grad.html?_r=1&emc=eta1

There is no information in here that is really new to me, but every time I read something like this it makes me question my choice to go to graduate school in philosophy even more; especially since I am not among the elite who have been accepted into a PGR top ten (or even top 20) school. I am not questioning my own desire to become a professor, I am questioning whether it's worth the risk since I may not ever have the opportunity.

I'm wondering what your reactions are to this article (and others like it)?
I think its definitely worth thinking about job opportunities very seriously before committing and definitely think it important to enter a program with a realistic view. The only silver lining I can think of when reading an article like that is that it is better to be entering a PhD program right now than it is to be finishing one.

Hopkins is one of my top choices. I'm interested in Wittgenstein and epistemology.

Sorry, I meant to post this in the Johns Hopkins thread above.
Has anyone declined the University of Minnesota, or is anyone planning to do so? I am way down their wait list, but heard a while back that they sometimes go well down it.
I know someone who got in and will be declining. Sorry I can't say more, but I know that at least one person waiting will hear good news.
Does anyone know what is going on with funding at Arizona State University?
They do not expect to have any funding available this year. There is apparently a small chance that some funding may appear at the usual time (mid March, according to their FAQ) but probably not.

I am curious about this too.

Hey someone posted a rejection from Rutgers via website. Did anyone else get this rejection?
Mine still says "no decision". Who knows?
I just learned I got fellowship at Ohio State! If you were nominated, stay near your e-mails!
