This sucks. If we haven't heard from Northwestern yet, can we assume that we are rejected?
Sorry. I meant 'sucks for me'. Congratulations to those who are accepted.

Well I have not been admitted anywhere. I still have yet to hear from Princeton, Oxford and a number of other schools, but if I can't make it into Northwestern I think my chances of getting in at 'really top' schools is pretty much zero. Sigh.
Hi Everyone,

So I don't know how many people will actually care about this but whatever. I posted a while ago concerned that MA programs weren't doing anything, but I've talked to several schools who all said "late March, early April" (ah!). I just got off the phone with NIU and got much more specific and helpful info. They said that their first meeting to discuss finalists is on the 26th of Feb. The department assistant told me to expect notifications two or three weeks after this. So, this looks like they will be notifying the second week of March. Just fyi.
I care about this. :) Thanks for the update!! Ugh, that feels so far away! Care to share which MA programs said "late march, early april"? (any news, no matter how vague, would be nice.) Thanks for posting, and good luck!

Anyone know why MA programs are so late?

Not least of all because their deadlines are later than for PhD programs.

FYI, Virginia Tech just started looking at apps the other day.
Did you get this info by calling or emailing them?

Hello,

I've been accepted to two programs with overlapping visit days - does anyone here know how I might approach this? I'd ideally like to visit both...
why don't you just tell each program that you have an overlap and ask if there is an alternative day you could visit? They know that people are weighing different programs, that's the whole point of the visiting day. At this point, they are trying to recruit you.

Texas A&M has at least gone through the applications that were submitted for the earlier deadline since these were considered for university wide funding. Of course, they probably will not start really looking at admissions until well after the Feb 15th deadline when all applications are in, but it is nice(?) to know that the process is at least started.
If any of you are still hoping for Schroeder to call, then you should probably give up that hope. I emailed the admissions secretary Tomiko Higuchi and got this response:

"The Admission Committee made the decision to admit total of 22 plus 2 on the waiting list last week. Of course not all 22 admitted people will end up coming to USC, probably around 5 but we don't know that for sure until April. Unfortunately, your name is not on the admitted list. "

From what I know of three people who got in, they all had MA's in philosophy (CSU-LA or NIU), and they all had really high GRE scores (1500+). The latter seems to contradict their website's comment that "[GRE scores] may play some role at the margin, but is not a central factor in, admissions decision."

I think it would have been better had they only admitted the 6 that showed up on TGC. I could then blame the low admittance rate more. But, 22? Sigh.
Let's form a murderous cult and kill everyone admitted and waitlisted at USC.

Their decision is going to come out sooner rather than later. I had an email dated 2/11/2010 from the graduate advisor Krstin Olson that requested more material from me to complete my application for review. I had decided at the last minute to not apply there, so I had not sent in transcripts, an application, a purpose statement, or a writing sample. If they're still willing to consider applicants that late into the game, I presume they're not that close to making a decision.
Wait, I'm confused. You say 'sooner rather than later' but what follows seems to support the opposite conclusion. Which did you mean?
In past years they wait-listed a few people but those decisions came out roughly at the same time as the admits. So if I haven't heard anything should I assume I've been rejected? Anyone with insider knowledge? Anyone else holding their breath for Pitt?
I'm assuming you're talking about the philosophy department, not HPS. I'm one of those still holding their breaths for the former. Last year, they seem to have sent out acceptances over the stretch of a few days. So when only two people posted acceptances last week, I figured that I might still be lucky. It's strange, though, that no other acceptances have been posted in the meantime.

Was anyone waitlisted or rejected from BC? We know there were two admissions, but are there any more?
I think we're fucked. I'm 0/6, though, so maybe I'm just overly bitter and pessimistic.

Sorry to hit people over the head with MA stuff, but does anyone have info on Brandeis' idea of "rolling admissions". They say on the website that admissions are accepted on a rolling basis until March 15th. Some schools make decisions AND notify as things come in, but others notify later, after final decisions have been made.

I called their dept. office and they're closed for the whole week! >:(

Anyone hear anything?
and find out when acceptances are being sent out. Thanks.
shot not!
Rejections from Pitt HPS are on the way. I just received a letter dated 2/4/10.
My condolences.

I take it you're an international applicant?

It will be a miracle if I make it through this without starting up smoking again.
why would you even try to make it through this without smoking? that seems nuts to me

When can we expect our acceptances to UCSD, Georgetown and Boston University?
And for my alter ego, Indiana HPS, U British Columbia and UW Seattle?

Thanks for the info!
I hear that UCSD will likely accept *very* few students this year (due to taking so many last year). Whether true or not, I don't know. But the info came from a graduate of the program who, as far as I know, is still in pretty close contact.

Last year's grad cafe postings are all pretty late- March 24. I wonder if there's any hope of them getting back more quickly this year?
I did my undergrad at Toronto and spoke with one of my Professors last week. He was expecting acceptances to go out this week, though he's not the one who makes the calls.

Is the Logic and Philosophy of Science PHD at Oregon a joke?
I thought they do continental/literary stuff.
Maybe it was a "typo"!!!1!!!11!!!
Someone posted a rejection via postal mail on TGC. Now I have to go home and look in my mailbox. What if there's a thin letter from USC? What will I do? Kill myself? Probably.

I know what to do! I just won't look in my mailbox.
Schrödinger's grad school decision letter?

Has anyone been contacted by any school for a second writing sample? If so, what was the context?
Has this happened to you?

Potential reasons:
Topic too obscure; no one could evaluate
Tie-breaker with some other student
It's Oxford and you only sent them one!

Anyone else hear from Depaul? I really want in there and havn't heard a thing. There's a post on tgc...is no news still good news for the continental boat?
i received a call today, but a friend of mine who is a current student there told me in the past that this stage is not necessarily a be-all end-all thing. he, for instance, was not invited for the early visit, but was admitted and fully funded. very mysterious indeed, but there is hope!
(Responding will take mere secs at worst, so be cool and play along -- I'll add up the responses once they start to dry up.)

Please post 'YES' if ALL of these apply to you:

-----

* My undergrad institution was ranked in the top 40 of the 2009 PGR

* I majored in Philosophy and my undergrad Phil GPA was greater than 3.8

* My cumulative GRE score was greater than 1300

* At least 3 of my LoR were written by Phil professors (I write 'at least' since I hear some people submit more than 3 letters)

* At least 1 of my letter-writers has published a book with one of the major presses (I leave it up to you to define 'major')

* My WS (or one of its ancestors) received an A in either an upper division u/g course or a grad-level course

* I fine-tuned my WS with the help of a Phil professor

-----

Please post 'BORDERLINE' if ALL BAR ONE apply to you.

Please post 'NO' if more than one, but less than five, DO NOT apply to you.

Please post 'HELL NO' if five or more DO NOT apply to you.

-----

What's the point of this? Basically, I want to see what proportion of the applicant pool satisfies my pre-conception of a good candidate for acceptance at Leiterrific program. (I haven't really looked back over the thread, but my guess is that the results will come out something like 7:8:4:1. Paradoxically, I'm prepared to be surprised.)
YES...and still expecting to strike out =/.

I'm feeling a bit skeptical - especially considering the same thing happened last year: one, then two, lone acceptances that stirred everyone up but were found to be inauthentic.

Any thoughts?
What I like even more is the obviously fake Harvard acceptance, sigh.
