Wow, I am on a waitlist for a school that I would absolutely love to attend.... and this is awful. I am accepted at a school that I would like as a second choice, and it is pretty much tied with my third choice. I was asked by a few waitlisters at my second choice (Madison) if I would decline...... It is a funny situation. I will decline if I get off the waitlist at my first choice, freeing up space for others... I guess I am just venting about waitlists! I really want people to make decisions so I can see if I am off the list, but, I am in the same position, as there are probably wait listers at my three accepted programs.... Is there a wait list support group?
That's a bummer, but you've got to just grit your teeth and wait it out until you hear for certain whether you'll get an offer from your top choice. Take comfort in the fact that you're on a waitlist with an offer in hand; there are a lot of folks here who don't have that luxury.

Villanova

Maybe a bit premature...but has anyone been accepted at Villanova that will probably accept an offer elsewhere? I'm on the waitlist and would like to get off of it. :) Nova is a great match for me and from what I know of it most of y'all that have been accepted will probably hate it. Seriously, you don't want to go to Villanova. You should just send them an email now declining their offer.

Gracias.
Usually VU ends up admitting one or two from off of their wait-list. Unfortunately, you may have to wait until 4.15.10, at which point you've probably already made plans for next year. Anyway, if need be, they will go to their wait-list in order to try to keep admits around 5.

While there was speculation that the VU post at TGC was for the one phil/theo assistantship, this has not been verified. I'm not sure if this person will accept given the requirements of the assistantship, e.g., the interdisciplinary nature of the dissertation. There is also, I think, a separate wait-list for this assistantship.

Did anyone receive any information as to what place they occupy on the wait list? thanks
Apparently they take interests into account, so it's not strictly ranked.
I woke up this morning and I discovered that I am now a cockroach.
my friend greg had about the same thing happen. Turns out he ingested strange things before bedtime. you will be okay by tomorrow.

I feel like my only role is to be the bearer of bad news. My status has officially changed on Purdue's website to "application denied." Those who have heard nothing yet may want to check, with varying trepidation depending on how bad you wanted to go.

0/2 officially, but expecting to be officially 0/5 here soon.
same here. not too bummed though. slightly confused as to how i was waitlisted at ND but denied at purdue, but i guess we've already decided this thing makes no sense, so so be it.

I still haven't heard one way or the other from Loyola. Anyone else in the same boat? Have those who have been accepted received any further info about how many are being admitted, etc.? Any of those accepted planning on turning LUC down?
There are only three funded spots at LUC this year. That is all I know.

I regret to inform you that I have decided to end our relationship. It is not that I do not love you, it is just that our relationship is going nowhere. You have told all your friends that they are accepted, or waitlisted, but what about me? If you want to turn me away, just do it so I can move on. There are other fine universities out there, and I can see my self settling down with one of them for at least a half dozen years. Just tell me what's on your mind, okay?
Here, here!

What is up with today? And why is NYU being so douche-y? Come on already!

Because they can be douche-y, and we will still apply.

Toronto HPS

To whoever wanted to know about the Toronto IHPST: The director of graduate studies informed me today that they had a target class of 9-10, they have made about 10 offers, and they will make a few more offers if people decline. No official wait lists have been set up, but if you haven't heard anything yet, there is some hope remaining for you.
Thanks for the info. Know how many people applied?

I was just waitlisted via email for Texas A&M's Masters Program (Yay! The first good news that I have heard!) Does anyone know to what extent they utilize thier waitlist? Thanks!!!
I'm an MA student at TAMU. Some of the students who were admitted last year were over 10 spots down on the waitlist. So, I think you should be optimistic. I think really highly of the department here, and the MA program has been really good to me.

If not, would someone call the department? dziękuję!
They are usually this late; I would guess first acceptances would be out the end of this week and then waitlist a week or so after that. If you don't here anything by the middle of next week then call.
Does anyone know how many people were accepted at Harvard this year?
6

. . . and I am not one of them. Sigh.

Should we expect to hear from them tomorrow?

I hear from trustworthy sources that they are making their decisions tomorrow, but knowing how fast things move in Oxford, I'd be surprised if we all hear before the weekend.
Anyone heard anything about Metaphysical Mayhem?
Yes, I just heard about it.

Now someone is claiming on TGC that DePaul is STILL considering people NOT invited to campus, but don't expect a decision by May?

Is this bullshit?

Gradcafe message said:

"Emailed to check status, I received a response that said I am still being considered but not to expect a decision before the first week of May."

ROFL

and

WTF?
For those of you who have been accepted/waitlisted at UC schools: how is the budget crisis affecting your decision to attend? I am certainly worried that faculty will head for greener pastures if the furloughs last another year or so. Anyone currently at these schools care to share your thoughts?
Berkeley and UCLA will remain incredible schools, no matter what happens.

Whether they will remain public schools in any interesting sense is another matter. But that's long term. If the state keeps cutting their budgets, they will raise tuition. But they will do whatever they have to do to keep their best professors.

Heard from a friend that Hopkins met to make its final decisions early this week, should be out next week.
I want to hate the fake posts on the grad cafe for being immature and silly, but they're so goddamn funny. Eva Braun... you're killing me.
You don't want to hate the fake posts, because they add a bit of levity to these harrowing proceedings.
WHAT THE FUCK IS IT WITH YOU PEOPLE AND BRIAN FUCKING LEITER? FOR FUCK'S SAKE, HE'S JUST A MID-LEVEL PHILOSOPHER TALKING OUT OF HIS ASS LIKE THE REST OF US. HE'S NOT SEXY, HE'S NOT FUCKABLE, HE'S NOT EVEN A GOOD READ. FOR FUCK'S SAKE

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. WHAT THE FUCK. IF YOU'RE GONNA FANTASIZE ABOUT FUCKING A PHILOSOPHER, IT SHOULD BE SOMEONE COOL, LIKE DERRIDA OR SOME SHIT.

Details for TGC UW Seattle acceptance??
I really hope all the acceptances didn't go out today.

I don't necessarily want to encourage this sort of thing, but this one is my favorite so far:

NYU, rejected
I had finally found the perfect sandwich. Ham, turkey, cheddar and provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, sprouts, mustard and submarine dressing. Delicious. As I went to refill my drink, I see a shady, scraggly man run over to my table, and finish the last few bite of my heavenly sandwich. I begin to protest this when I notice that it is none other than Brian God Damn Leiter. Grinning, he begins inching towards the door, looks me straight in the eyes, and shouts so that all in the restaurant can hear him, “No one will ever believe you!!” and walks out. Later in the day, I received word from NYU that, due to recent developments, I would not be offered a position within the department.

p.s. here is a really high-res photo of Brian Leiter - http://philosophy.uchicago.edu/podcasts/leiter_brian_print.jpg
Best line so far...

"Turns out, it was Chris Hansen. I'm writing this in prison."
I'm lonely and have nothing but the Leiter jokes to keep me company. And they aren't that good. I have an idea

Feeling lonely while waiting for results? Scared you'll never get in anywhere? Dreading those rejection letters? Angsting over funding? You're not alone in spirit, and you don't have to be alone at all!

Lets be friends. Do you a) have some kind of messaging/chat program, and b) want to talk to other prospectives? Post your screenname and the name of the messenger here, and then we can all add you to our buddy lists and commiserate, share joy and pain, really live, etc.

I'll start. I'm on AIM, and my screenname is wondershocked. I'm on all the goddamn time, F5ing TGC and checking my e-mail. Are you?

I'm just so goddamn lonely
Okay, I know everyone has read the famous "Don't Go To Graduate School in the Humanities" article, and posting it here will only elicit disparaging sighs and eye-rolls. But this (http://drjon.typepad.com/jon_cogburns_blog/2007/09/explanation-of-.html) is new to me, and it's kind of terrifying. Can anyone testify to the truth or falsity of this cattle-call-from-hell account of the APA?
I have a good friend who just interviewed at the Eastern APA last Christmas. I thought maybe she was exaggerating how terrible it was.

How much do you guys wanna bet that one of the three posts condemning the jokes over at TGC is written by none other than Brian Leiter himself? The guy cracks me up. He's the definition of an internet tough guy.
Leiter is such an UGLY geek, it freaks me out
His head is like the sun--if I look for more than a split-second, it painfully blinds me
