What sucks about being 0/6 with only NYU left to hear from is the fact that it is impossible not to get one's hopes up, even though the heavy feeling in one's stomach gives a much more honest appraisal of one's chances than the brain ever could.

I suppose there are programs I haven't officially been rejected from yet. Ha!

Does anyone else in this position find it really hard to show up in public without a terrible feeling of shame?

I feel you. Many people outside of philosophy don't have the slightest idea how competitive the admissions process is. I applied to fourteen places, and so far I've received nine rejections and only one acceptance. When I tell people this, they always have this look of puzzlement on their faces, as though I must be a moron. Hang in there and good luck.

Has anyone been rejected form Harvard yet? Has anyone confirmed that the lack of an acceptance or wait-list means a rejection? I saw another post that said 6 people have been accepted. I see 3 acceptances and 2 wait-lists on TGC. I can't imagine there are any acceptances or wait-lists that haven't gone out yet. Why don't they tell us we're rejected?
I have good reason to believe that no word=rejection.
After all... it's Harvard.

I got a email from Prof. Aquilla which informed me that i can't be accepted to his program. He told me that economic situation is bad and he will retire next year... damn.. I already knew that he is old professor, but it's too earlier than I expect..
However, i can feel that he is a good person from his letter.

This year is over... i should find a new job... not philosophy..
Did you happen to apply to any MA programs (or do you already have an MA)?

Does anyone know when we can expect decisions from Boston University? Haven't heard so much as a whisper from them yet.

I went to visit their program this fall. The director of admissions said not to expect any decisions until mid-March. Apparently, they like to take their time.

It looks like a lot of people have heard nothing from a few places. I've heard nothing from eight places. Is anyone else still experiencing silence on this order of magnitude? Thanks.
I've heard nothing from 12 places. Beat that!

What the hell is taking them so long?!
Agreed!
Do they have 1000 applicants this year? They usually issue the results in mid-Feb...it's so slow this year.
I applied to the UCL MA programme and I got an informal acceptance via email a few days ago. Which programme did you apply for?

Today may be the day that my hopes get completely dashed.
Removed myself from the waitlist, and declined a funded offer respectively.

I hope this helps someone.
Are you accepting the Cornell offer?

Anyone heard nothing from Yale?
Yes. Got an email directing me to the website yesterday. Mine ended up in my junk mail folder, may want to check there.
Someone in the UK got their rejection via mail. Mail is much faster there so I'd imagine anyone who hasn't heard will get theirs in the next week or so.
Oxford BPhil, MPhil, DPhil?

There have been no DPhil posts on Gradcafe.....

I wonder if one effect of people applying to fifteen or twenty schools (which was unheard of in the past) is that more people will get accepted at ten or so schools and more people will be shut out than might have been otherwise. The really good applicants will take more of the open spots than they would have if they'd applied more selectively, and the weak applicants will have a lower probability of getting lucky somewhere.
I'm not sure it means more people will get shut out so much as it would mean more schools would delve deeper into their waitlists. I would expect more people to get shut out because there are more people applying (and in this economy, it seems more people are deciding to stay in school) and because schools have reduced the number of admits (again, due to the economy).
Has anyone heard anything from them? I emailed them last week and they told me the first three weeks of March would. I don't know why they are taking so long if they only had 120 applicants :(

There is nothing on TGC...so does that mean no one has heard?
I've not heard. It would be nice if they decide soon. :)

I just got waitlisted at Fordham-- anyone else hear from them? There's one acceptance post at tcg, any more? And what about:

DePaul
Duquesne
NSSR

and others...???

How were you informed of your wait-listed status at Fordham? Postal, email, phone?

Post on TGC

Anonymous

March 5 2010, 17:56:26 UTC 6 years ago

Look, I don't know if that post on the TGC is serious or not; if it's not serious- that's really really not funny. If it is serious, this is not something worth hurting yourself over. Lots of us will be shut out this year (I have no acceptances right now either). That's just how it works. There's only so many openings, and a lot of a candidates.
posts like that, regardless of sincerity, remind me how stupid and myopic even "philosophers" can be.... does academic philosophy help you live a good life? to the yale poster-- seriously read up and wake up///

Did anybody else get a weird email from Tufts that just says to keep checking the website? Like I don't do that hourly anyway.

Yeah, I got that e-mail too. I thought it was pretty weird considering there were acceptances posted on tgc already. I expected that a decision would have been posted when I checked, but there is no such thing.

Can anyone claim this posting on TGH? Details?
I'm the second poster for the MA. Like I said there: it was a somewhat personalized email, and there was no info that could be useful to other applicants.

Does anyone here have experience with TO's philosophy program? I'd really appreciate some info.

Best of luck, everyone!

Does anyone know if DePaul automatically considers some of its Ph.D. applicants for their master's program if they are not granted admission at the doctoral level? Someone on TGC said that first-round rejections had already been sent, does this mean we are still in the running for the MA? Thanks!

I havn't heard from DePaul either, but I already have an MA, so I doubt I'm in the running for that// I'm hoping I'm still under consideration for PhD

Some TGC archaeology suggests that in 2009 and 2008 they accepted people before sending out rejections. So, anyone have any guesses/proper insight as to how long it will be until they make offers?

Have all the rejections gone out for Cornell? I have not heard anything yet...should I assume the worst?
I don't know what that rejection on the TGC is, it seems strange to get one that early and through postal mail. I haven't heard anything yet. I'm assuming none (or almost none) of the rejections have gone out.

I still haven't heard anything. I know that they have extended acceptances, waitlists, and rejections. However... have they not rejected everyone yet? or is their an unofficial waitlist?
we got rejected; I emailed phil dept last week// notices are being sent out// they contacted first picks and waitlisters in Feb; they are just lagging; but contact them if you want immediate closure
Anyone want to claim this? Is this credible? I have doubts, given that they accepted people a few days ago, and by email...
I don't think it's real--instead, I suspect he/she meant to upset the earlier Yale reject and/or his sympathizers.
