I'm deciding between attending GSU's MA program with funding, and CU-Boulder MA without. After discussing the options with two of my professors, I was surprised to find that both recommended I decline the funded place at GSU and eat the relatively low tuition cost at CU.

This is certainly a viable route financially speaking, but does it make any sense from a placement perspective?

I'm just trying to get inside their heads to find why they are both opposed to Georgia...

Any thoughts are welcome.
For what it's worth, I too was accepted to GSU, and all of my letter writers have told me that it's an excellent program with a very solid placement record. I'd be interested to hear why your professors suggested that you decline the GSU offer.

Your professors are detached from reality. Moreover, they won't be footing the bill. Go to GSU, which, I think, is as good, if not better, for the MA than Colorado.
It sounds like a lot of programs are mentioning a "record number of applicants", and a number places (that haven't in the past) seem to be getting 300+. I wonder if this is a consequence of people applying to more places or more people applying or both. But there definitely seems to be some sort of trend.
Yea, I've noticed this as well. What makes it really crazy is the combination of record number of apps and [at some programs] a reduced number of acceptances.

Just got an impersonal "heads up" email from someone in the graduate school at UC Davis informing me that "a decision is being made on my application" and that I may view the decision next Monday after 8am PST.

I guess I should start preparing for a rejection.

Has anyone else received this email?
Hey, I've just found out that I'm in a waitlist (no details about it) at Arizona U. Anyone declining? Or anyone has more info about their waitlists?
Today I received the rejection from U. of Chicago; I think this implies that my application does not deserve the MAPH reviewing. I feel really bad about this.
When was the letter dated?

Got the email from Colin Macleod today. No word on funding yet. I guess UVic is minor league compared to Chicago, Arizona etc, but I'm happy! It sounds like a pretty solid MA program to spend a couple of years in beefing up my CV.
Have fun there. Victoria in particular and BC in general are lovely.
The philosophy/theology assistantship at Villanova has been accepted. It was declined by a prospective student and offered to first on the wait-list.

Any news on the other 5 assistantships? Has anyone decided to accept or decline yet?
^is this the person who actually accepted the spot? Or are you just inferring that the offer on tgc was someone who actually accepted the offer?

I randomly logged into my online account yesterday and was able to see my decision.

Just curious- how many people on here have still not yet heard from Cornell?
I haven't heard anything either. Anyone care to speculate what this means?

Applicants should be notified by March 15. I actually just spoke with our admissions director, who is preparing to send me the final list of decisions by the end of the week. This year, the University is beginning a process of attempting to contact applicants by e-mail as well; so, with luck, we should begin contacting during next week in earnest.
Many thanks.

Has anyone heard from Boston U yet?

I called the department on Monday. The woman told me that applications are still being reviewed and no decisions would come for at least a couple of weeks.

Anyone heard from New Mexico?
I have yet to hear anything. Though the rumor here on WGI is that the admissions committee met on Monday.

At what point is it appropriate to contact departments regarding one's status?

And who is it appropriate to contact?
At this stage, I say it's entirely appropriate to contact a department. I've called a few places, and no one has seemed irritated about it; in fact, everyone has been very understanding and accommodating. I've also e-mailed a few places. If you do choose to e-mail a department, your best best to get a reply is to e-mail the director of graduate studies. Good luck.

So, I'm on the waitlist... this is a plea. If you're going to decline, pleeeease pleeeease don't wait until April. I know it's still early, and I have no right to request this. UNC is my dream school, and the waiting is killing me.

Thanks, and congrats on getting in!!
why is UNC your dream school

Is anyone on the waitlist? If so, do you know how many admits there have been, and how many are on the waitlist?
3 admits (I'm one) - I'm sorry that I don't have any info on the wait list. I'm visiting Memphis in a couple of weeks and will visit the other schools to which I've been accepted as well soon after. Hope to have a decision by the first week of April. Sorry for the wait! But I will do my best to decide ASAP.

Recently two people have been added to the wait lists at Davis and Riverside, according to the nets.
What's this about?

Also what is the deal with U British Columbia? Have PhD+ MA decisions been made?

Thanks!
Via the website. I was hopeful when I survived the initial cuts last month. My potential options are dwindling.
Cheer up! My status is still under the Academic Review. Hmmm..

via postal service?
is this for real?!
I'm the second waitlist for Pitt on TGC. It's for real. Very nice (apparently) hand-signed letter from James Allen; it says the waitlist is "not long," but doesn't give any specific details. No invitation to visit, but it does include a list of graduate seminars (with descriptions) from Fall 2008, along with a list of faculty publications and an offer to send any of these to me.
All the acceptances for UWO seem to have gone out a few weeks ago. Has anyone been waitlisted there? Anyone accepted plan on declining? I've yet to hear anything and it might be my only remaining shot, alas
I know at least one person who'll definitely be declining.

I received a rejection via email this afternoon in response to my inquiry.

(Yes, I am the tgc poster and the one who posted anonymously earlier about emailing the department.)

This one stings more than some of the others but c'est la vie. I'm very fortunate to have great offers already in hand.

Unfortunately, the email conveyed nothing useful for me to pass along. If I were to speculate, I'd say they are going to notify people tonight or tomorrow, based purely on the fact that Columbia's spring break starts this weekend.

Good luck to those still waiting to hear!
Thank you for the heads up! I'm sorry you were rejected.

just so i have an idea of my odds of getting off the waitlist.

I second this request, and sincerely appreciate any info that anyone wishes to share on their decision on Vandy either way. Thanks

-fellow wait lister
Accepted to the MA program (posted on TGC) - will consider it, but I have a couple of PhD acceptances as well so I will likely decline. Waiting on details of PhD acceptances prior to declining - if there is no funding anywhere then the MA will be in play, so I can't decline it just yet.
I'm not sure if I am the only one who was unsure about their status at Vanderbilt, but if you haven't heard anything yet, it doesn't bode well. I emailed Prof. Talisse earlier today, and he replied telling me that admits and alternates have been notified, and that anyone else would be getting a thank you for your application letter soon.

This is now my third closure post for others on WGI, and I'm 0/5 unless I got in to BC's unfunded MA program. I think I'm due for some good news next week... That's not the way it plays out, though.
"a thank you for your application letter"

So that's what they call it :/.
