"An 'inner process' stands in need of outward criteria."

Irritates me every time I read it.
Why?

Is anyone still holding on to an offer from Toronto (PhD) but considering offers elsewhere? I am high on the waiting list, and I would consider it a great favor and an act of beneficence if you could find reason to decline your offer at Toronto.

Sincerely,

A fellow aspiring scholar
I know of one person who (probably) *very* recently declined (as in, within the past three days).

What's your area?

Anyone declining Texas A&M's MA program?
Dear Wisconsin Admits:

Here is a list of things I'm willing to give you if you decline the offer:

(1) Any number of expendable organs (including but not limited to: kidneys, gallbladder, eyes, etc.)
(2) All of my material possessions. I might not have much, but you name it and it's yours (Gibson Les Paul, MacBook Pro, etc.).
(3) First-born child (He or she only exists in some distant possible world anyhow, so screw it).

That's all I can think of for now.

Seriously though...is anyone planning declining Wisconsin?
I'm going to decline at Madison very soon, probably in the next 24 hours. Message me and I'll give you an address to ship the Macbook.

Pretty please? How big's the wait list?
Anyone out there planning on or hoping to decline UIUC or University of Cincinnati? The DGS @ Cincinnati seems to think that people will just let offers and waitlist positions expire instead of officially declining.
I'm in at UIUC and next on the waitlist at Cincinnati. I'll figure out what I'll be doing once I hear back from Maryland.

It struck me, the other day, that none of the papers the schools I've been admitted to want me to sign have express clauses saying that I have to attend their school *exclusively*... and as one of these people who tries to find a loophole in everything, I couldn't help but wonder: how feasible would it be to attend two places at once? Put it like this - Princeton and Rutgers are half an hour or so away from each other by train. Could some enterprising soul accept offers from both, go to seminars at both, hand in papers (presumably with significantly overlapping content) at both, pull down stipends from both, and get away with it? If so, for how long?
As long as they can afford the train ride and taxation of their $40,000+ income. Or as long as they can stand their indignant professors and accept being blacklisted come job time.

Anyone plan on declining NIU or Rochester anytime soon?
I am going to be declining Rochester in the very near future. I hope this helps you out.

Anyone declining offers? I'd also like to know if anyone has reliable info on the number of people admitted and waitlisted. I'm on the waitlist, but I'm too diffident to ask for much info.
I, too, am on the waitlist (in the top three, apparently, but I don't know how much that means as I've also heard it's very short). As of yesterday, no one had declined yet . . . but I still haven't received a definite no, so am holding out (some modicum of) hope.

If anyone is considering to decline Stanford please do it soon. I am at their wait list and got an email from Prof Crimmins. He told me that only two people declined and the rest did not let them know what their decisions.
So there are at least 4 people out there who did not say "yes" or "no" to Stanford. I know it is very a difficult decision but if you had already got some offers please make up your mind before it is too late for the people on the wait list.
Best of luck to everyone this coming week. This wait is just killing me every day!
I know that my housemate will very likely decline Stanford to go to Harvard.

I know, I know: it's my fault for only applying to three places, and I am not trying to bitch about this too much, but it's been frustrating to me to not understand what exactly occurs in an application process for some of the schools. Why were some students rejected immediately and others not for a month after? What is going on?

Well, I emailed Prof Mann at Columbia and asked, after I received a delayed rejection that came now, as opposed to almost a month ago. I figure this might at least assuage some people's wonders if their application was considered more or on some internal waitlist or any such theories. In his response, Mann said:

"There is at best a tenuous connection between when a decision was made and when it showed up online: the software Columbia uses updates slowly, and decisions were entered into the database when office staff had time to do so, not necessarily right when those decisions were made."

So if you had a delayed rejection - well, it sucks, I know, but don't stress over it. Just bad luck it seems (at least for schools that use a system like Columbia's online one, which is the applyyourself program, common it seems).
Only three schools... and one of them Columbia.

Duquesne!

Anyone had word from Duquesne, yet? I'm assuming Phd spots are filled by now...waiting to see what kind of MA offers they have outgoing.
My MA offer arrived in the mail today. It actually arrived at my parents' house. They live about 20 minutes from Pittsburgh, so I'd assume that I'm one of the first to receive it. I've been sidetracked with work all night, so I haven't posted to TGC. I will go make an acceptance post after I finish posting here, just to be clear.

If you can't wait any longer, you might want to email Ron Polansky. He is very prompt about responding to emails.

My letter had no information about a waiting list for the MA, for what it's worth, nor any stats. Financial aid info will come later, as well.

This is my only hope...

Please those who have other choices decline Syracuse...I beg u.
If it's any consolation, I'm on the waitlist at Syracuse, and there's a very good chance I'll remove my name within the next couple days.
Decline Harvard and I'll bake you some cookies!

(I bake delicious cookies.)
To the person who was accepted off the waitlist on gradcafe, do you mind telling your area of interest?

O'Keefe says they're moving down the list based on that, so I'm curious what you are!
Any other waitlisters finding that email communication isn't happening with them? I don't want to email to much but the couple of emails I've sent haven't been responded to. Is this the same for those of you with acceptances? I asked something other than "what's my postion" last time and still no response. If you're getting through, who did you email?
I found that Peggy Wells was very prompt and friendly, the couple times I've emailed them.

should also be declining UWM (unfunded) soon.
Hope this helps.
oh my god, i could kiss you. can i ask why you declined?
In a recent post I mentioned that I had recently declined offers from Washington University St. Louis, University of Washington, UC Riverside, NIU (MA), and Missouri St. Louis (MA). Today I declined remaining offers from UT Austin and Brandeis (MA), and accepted an offer from USC. I hope that this is helpful to those still waiting. Best of luck.
