(to which I don't exactly expect a definitive answer here, but it would be nice to hear others' opinions on the matter):

How strong a factor should finances be in deciding between programs? Assume two programs, both offering enough to live on for five years, though only one offers enough to live *comfortably* for five years, often extends funding beyond the five years, has extra money to send students to conferences, etc. Should financial differences override other factors (faculty, location, etc)?
"though only one offers enough to live *comfortably*"

Your definition of comfort is key. Assuming they are both 5 year, and both give you above $X, where $X is an amount that does not negatively impact your work output, ignore the financial differences.

Although not offering conference money is worrying. If you're living right on the financial edge, conferences (and future job interviews) might badly tip you over. And then you're in the situation of money problems affecting your work output.

Also keep in mind, of course, where the differing amounts are coming from (TA/Fellowship).

I accepted Ohio State's offer of admission this morning, and just removed myself from the the waitlist at UW Madison (#5) and Notre Dame (#4). I'll be declining a funded (Fellowship) offer from Rochester soon, as well. I hope this helps someone out!
...And all out. I just declined an offer from Rochester with a University Fellowship. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!
So, as I'm making my decision I realized I have an important question I don't know how to answer. That is: how important is the reputation of your recommenders?? Basically, I'm looking at an MA program that is well-known, but most of their professors are very young, have VERY little publishing, and are not from stellar institutions. With all that in mind, it seems like that might really hurt my chances to get into a top PhD program.

So, how much does the work of the recommenders matter? Any help would be most appreciated!!
If the MA program is well-known, it must be well-known for a reason. I suspect you're missing something- it would help if you say which one it is.

Since I have been posting on this board since August (and last year as well), I thought I might give my username some closure.

I accepted an offer from Cornell on Friday.

Good luck to any applicants applying next year.
Are there any offers that you haven't yet declined?
With the deadline fast approaching, my wait-list anxiety is reaching fever pitch. Anyone planning on declining Wisconsin?
i'd love to know...
Just curious - where are you declining?
Anyone declining Notre Dame, Maryland or Boston Univ?

also, anyone have an opinion on either? which one is 'better', everything considered? rumors? gossip? personal experience?

Are you on both waitlists? These 2 schools were top choices of mine - I'd love to hear thoughts on them as well - even though I only have a shot at one at this point (Vanderbilt waitlistee).
Just a quick note to say that I declined an (unfunded) offer at Temple and dropped off the waitlist at University of Cincinnati where I was quite high up on the list. In an ironic twist, I have accepted a fully funded offer to Rice University. Not philosophy though- Anthropology. I have officially defected, although one of my advisers does a lot of work on ethics, aesthetics, and the intersection between analytic philosophy and anthropology. Which is right up my alley. So happy endings for me and good luck to everyone else.

Sincerely,
guy who made the Hitler video.
As people have become increasingly anxious due to being on wait lists at schools, I have decided that I will let all of you know where I have declined and withdrawn my name from wait lists. I hope that this helps out.

Withdrawals:
Notre Dame
Northwestern

Declines:
Western Ontario
Rochester
UMass Amherst
Toronto
Based on where you declined, you obviously accepted your offer from University of Phoenix Online. Congrats! (Seriously though, congrats on the offer you did get, and thanks again for posting the info for all of us wait listers). Rock.

With much sorrow, I've just declined a place (and fellowship) at the U of Arizona. Good luck to whoever ends up going there - it's a really great place and I am having regrets already.
Thanks for letting us know! Where is it that's tempted you away?

Hope this helps someone. It is an excellent program that is on the rise.

Where are you going instead?
There have been three declines recently. Has anybody accepted?
... or heard anything from the department in the last week?

Apparently there are five outstanding offers still. It's so, so close to the deadline! If I believed in a divine being, I'd be praying right now. You would be making some people VERY happy if you decide soon, particularly if you decline. So, anyone planning on doing that?

Also, waitlisted: anyone moving off the waitlist?

I took my name off the wait list a few days ago. (I think I posted this a few pages back)

Not sure that anyone cares about this, since it is unfunded, but I did decline this offer today.
In what can only be called an act of utter selflessness, I have now declined ALL of my offers. I hope this helps out some desperate waitlistees.
You rule! Where/why/AOI?

For those sitting on Austin offers, any hint as to your plans? Hanging on in anticipate of other waitlist action or weighing other comparable offers? Bonus points if you mention your area of interest!
I just accepted the offer from UT this morning. I do ancient and ethics.
Those of you that were accepted, what is the stipend and is it for 5 years of funding??
I declined my offer, and from what I understand all students are offered the same package:

5 years full funding, health insurance, 2 semesters of fellowship to split up as you like. Stipend starts at $20,00 and gradually increases (by a thousand or so) each year, with TAship & summer teaching spots available.

With very much sorrow, I have just declined a great offer of University of Illinois at Chicago. Good luck to everyone!
A great offer, but I got lucky elsewhere. Hope this helps someone.
