This is for anyone applying to Philosophy graduate programs during the 2009-2010 academic year. Please share acceptances, rejections, wait-list notifications, and so on.
Rutgers' system won't let me in. I'm wondering why. There is a number of possible reasons (at least given my current epistemic position):
1. Although I deem I know my birth date and my gender pretty well after all these years, and although I c&p'ed my RUID number, I made some mistake filling in the required data. 2. A technical problem with the website / my file. 3. Some change was made in my file. (Naturally, this is the most interesting possibility.) 4. The system can't take any longer my obsessive behaviour and has decided to put an end to it.
Did anyone else experienced the same phenomena and/or would like to participate in this unhelpful, pointless discussion?
If by 'buzz' you mean 'where to go' you should first specify your interests and goals. Presumably the second part of this is to get into a good PhD program. Even given that where you should go should depend on what you're interested in.
It seems pretty common now that applicants and even faculty take it that there's a large amount of chance in admissions. That is, even if a student is well-qualified and even particularly well-suited to a particular set of programs, she may not get in because of fundamental flaws in the admissions process. This kind of skepticism about the capacity of the process to generally collect the most suitable applicants pervades this forum. However, while it's not surprising that such an attitude is prevalent given the psychological stresses associated with admissions, it's unclear why this view is so prevalent.
It seems like the main evidence offered that casts doubt on the process are cases where an individual, her letter writers, and friends all thought she was suitable for some set of programs but then she failed to be admitted to them (or got into some unexpected set of programs). But it seems obvious that the judgments of one's friends, self, and letter writers are clearly skewed. Notably this skewing doesn't simply shade the applicant's prospects to the better, though this is often the case, but instead indicates an expectation. But expectations are conditioned by all sorts of factors, many of which completely irrelevant to one's suitability to a certain set of programs. Indeed, it's analytic that the members of a faculty at a particular program are the one's whose judgments wholly determine what constitutes suitability for their own program. Hence, people should stop grousing about on how unfair things are, take their lumps, and look for something else to do.
Just received an email from Sayre-McCord. The email looks like it is tailor made to appear personalized, but is really automatic. The email was unsolicited.
Email did not specify how many applications there were in total, but it said that 12 have been accepted, 140 rejected, and that I was in the remaining group (the waitlist), which is unranked. More info expected at the end of March.
"The Admissions Committees are hard at work selecting the fall 2010 class. The fist decision letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning March 10. After that date they will continue to be mailed as decisions are made."
Anyone else got a survey to fill out in addition to this e-mail? I was a bit taken back because the survey wanted me to supply information to NSSR that the adcom should have had already.
Has anyone who received an acceptance phone call also received an email? I got the call on Sunday but still have not received an email with the details on my fellowship, visiting day, etc. Anyone else in the same position?

So, time for idle speculation: How large do you think the waitlist is? How do they proceed through an unranked waitlist?
